So, without further ado here are 5 songs you should listen to this week (right now).
1) Evanescence – Imperfection (Nu Metal/Operatic)
Evanescence are a rock band who hail from Little Rock, Arkansas. The band rose to mega stardom in 2003 with their huge hit Bring Me to Life taken from their debut album Fallen. Although the band has seen many changes and turbulent times in the fifteen years since, late 2017 the band released their fourth studio album Synthesis. The album includes reworked versions of the band's previous material with an orchestral arrangement and electronica music elements in addition to two new songs, one of them being Imperfection.
Imperfection shows Evanescence the way they were always meant to be heard. Gone are the heavy, thick guitar riffs, pounding drum beats and they are replaced with delicate string sections and booming brass that all combine perfectly to compliment the real star of the show here, the vocals. Amy Lee has always had an amazing voice but on imperfection you really FEEL it. Emotion pores from every aspect of the track and if anything Amy Lee’s vocals have only improved over the years. Imperfection showcases that strings and synth can combine perfectly, but only when you have an amazing voice that melds the two together.
2) Breaking Benjamin – Feed The Wolf (Hard Rock/Metal)
Breaking Benjamin are a hard rock/metal band who hail from Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. The band were formed in 1999 and in the near two decades since have released 6 studio albums. Feed the Wolf is the second single taken from their newly released sixth studio album Ember. Ember is an amazing album and almost any of the tracks could have been chosen for this week’s playlist but Feed the Wolf just edges it.
Feed the Wolf is an explosion of a track. Breaking Benjamin over the years have experimented with many styles and differing sounds but Feed the Wolf is an absolute balls to the walls, heavy rock anthem. The drums throughout the track are incredible, the guitars are brilliant and the vocals are insanely good. Feed the Wolf shows Breaking Benjamin at their best and if you are looking for a new heavy rock belter, you NEED to listen to this track.
3) Skarlett Riot – Affliction (Hard Rock/Metal)
Skarlett Riot are a heavy hitting, hard rock powerhouse who hail from Scunthorpe, UK. Formed in 2010 Skarlett Riot have been hard at work ever since realising countless singles, three EP’s and two full length albums with their latest release being the sublime 2017 album “Regenerate”. The band combine heavy metal music and a sublime vocal style to create a unique style of metal which is amazing to listen to.
Affliction is the third single from the bands 2017 release Regenerate and epitomizes the Skarlett Riot sound. The song has everything it needs to become a metal powerhouse of a track. The killer guitar riff, the intense drums and catchy lyrics all combine to make an outstanding track which sticks in your head. Combine that with some amazing vocal work and you’ve got yourself a track which you simply can’t ignore.
4) In Her Own Words – Silver Lights (Pop-Punk/Pop-Rock)
In Her Own Words are a pop-punk quartet who hail from Los Angeles, California. In Her Own Words released their first EP in 2011 titled Brand New Me. In 2016, In Her Own Words signed to InVogue Records and released the full-length album titled Unfamiliar in which the sublime song Silver Lights is the lead single.
Silver Lights is the very definition of an amazing pop-punk anthem. Seriously, if you go look up pop-punk in the dictionary there should be a picture of this track. In Silver Lights, In Her Own Words encompass everything that pop-punk should be. It’s fun, energetic and frantic as hell.
5) Arctic Monkeys – Four Out Of Five (Indie rock)
Unless you have been living under a rock for the last decade or so, there’s a good chance you will know who the Arctic Monkeys are. From their beginnings as local S indie darlings all the way to world conquering powerhouses the Sheffield band have always been at the forefront of the indie rock genre. Four Out Of Five is the lead single taken from their newest album Tranquillity Base Hotel & Casino and is yet another huge change in sound for the band.
Gone are the thick guitar riffs and pounding drum beats seen on the bands previous album AM and in their place the softer, twinkling sounds of a baby grand piano. The drums have been simplified, the guitar is much softer but the song still somehow retains the distinctive Arctic Monkeys sound. The lyrics and vocal work here may well be one of the best in the Arctic Monkeys catalogue and the chorus is so catchy you will be singing it for days. Yes the Arctic Monkeys sound has changed over the years but with belters such as this, surely that’s only a good thing.
