Taken By The Tide Interview

REVENGE

Taken By The Tide are a brilliant, hard hitting metal band who hail from Nottingham, UK. Founded almost a decade ago¸ Taken By The Tide have constantly challenged and evolved their sound into a pure technical metal masterclass. They effortlessly blend shredding guitar riffs, blistering drum beats and sensational vocals to create a truly unique sound, which hits like a sledgehammer.

They recently released their E.P. Revenge on August 3rd to huge critical acclaim. The E.P. is getting stellar reviews from some of the largest publications around including Metal Hammer and Kerrang! I recently caught up with the band to discuss their new EPtheir unique sound and how misfortune shaped the success of the Revenge E.P.

Despite being lucky enough to play some bigger shows I'd say it's the tiny sweaty gigs where it REALLY kicks off. There’s no substitute to getting right in people's faces and the chemistry of those moments.”

1. FIRSTLY, RATHER A STRAIGHTFORWARD QUESTION, HOW DID YOU GET INTO MUSIC? WAS THERE A DECISIVE MOMENT OR EVENT THAT YOU REMEMBER THAT MADE YOU STOP AND THINK, WOW, HOLY SHIT THIS IS WHAT I WANT TO DO WITH MY LIFE?

For myself it started really young with my Dad playing guitar around the house. Then from there getting my own and figuring it all out. My first band in Secondary school was a big mile stone too. We were terrible but, playing WITH other people is a whole different kind of feeling of course as well as creating something new from scratch. Then years and years of scrapping around in pubs playing to nobody but learning each time. I definitely hold those years dearly…

The little victories along the way (as well as plenty of defeats) made me realise that this is pretty much the only thing I REALLY know. Much to the annoyance of loved ones around me, I'm sure.

2. “MOLOCH” IN PARTICULARLY SHOWS MASSIVE AMBITION FOR A BAND SO EARLY IN YOUR CAREER. THE GUITAR RIFFS ARE AMAZING, THE DRUMS ARE POUNDING, AND THE VOCAL PERFORMANCE IS SIMPLY STAGGERING, THE SONG HAS A MASSIVE ANTHEMIC FEEL AND COULD EASILY INSPIRE STADIUM SIZED MOSH PITS. WHAT IS THE CRAZIEST/ MOST UNUSUAL THING THAT YOU HAVE SEEN AT A TAKEN BY THE TIDE MOSH PIT OR GIG IN GENERAL?

We've had some pretty mad pits before. Despite being lucky enough to play some bigger shows I'd say it's the tiny sweaty gigs where it REALLY kicks off. There’s no substitute to getting right in people's faces and the chemistry of those moments. That said, we have big ambitions certainly, because we try and push further than where we're at All. The. Time. It's great that you can pick up on that.

I know a lot of bands say similar things, and a lot of bands acknowledge that a lot of bands say those things, but we're really not interested in playing along with the tropes of a particular sub-genre. We just want to push ourselves and create from our pool of interests. The simplest truth.”

3. ALL OF US HERE AT ECHION MUSIC BELIEVE THAT REVENGE IS AN AMAZING EP AND SHOWS THAT TAKEN BY THE TIDE HAVE CRAZY POTENTIAL! THE EP FEATURES MANY DIFFERENT INFLUENCES AND GENRES ALL INTERTWINED IN A POWERFUL METAL PACKAGE, WHICH REALLY PACKS A SLEDGEHAMMER OF A PUNCH. HOW DID THIS UNIQUE SOUND COME ABOUT?

It's really great to hear that. We try! I think it's just the product of our various influences. We've never said to ourselves ‘we're a death metal band, or where a metal core band’ or whatever. We have a common goal in mind that is outside of any particular box. I know a lot of bands say similar things, and a lot of bands acknowledge that a lot of bands say those things, but we're really not interested in playing along with the tropes of a particular sub-genre. We just want to push ourselves and create from our pool of interests. The simplest truth.

4. “MOLOCH” IN PARTICULARLY HAS A DARK AND BROODING BACKDROP WHICH PUTS THE LISTENER ON EDGE AND, DARE IS SAY IT, UNCOMFORTABLE. HOW DID THIS SOUND COME ABOUT? WAS IT AN INTENTIONAL DECISION TO PUT THE LISTENER UNDER THIS AMOUNT OF STRESS DURING THE TRACK?

Yes, it's very deliberate. I'm speaking for Eric really, so I hope he doesn't mind, but I think with that track he set himself the brief of trying something different for us. What its missing in riff tallys, is more than made up for with that back drop and the atmosphere. That, along with the lyrical content just worked.

We've had line-up changes, marriages, kids, illness, management dropping us. You name it, it's happened. A few months ago, we scrapped everything apart from the actual music and started again.”

5. THIS INTERVIEW IS TAKING PLACE ONLY A FEW DAYS SINCE THE RELEASE OF REVENGE.HOW HAVE THE PAST FEW DAYS BEEN FOR YOU? IS IT A GOOD FEELING TO GET THE NEW MUSIC OUT THERE?

Astounding really. It's all very fresh at the moment and new to us so it's a lot to take in. The initial response has been so much more than we could have hoped for. This record took a lot of work and nearly broke us, so having it pay itself off in terms of recognition is amazing. In fact, let's take a moment to say thank you to everyone that has pre ordered a CD or downloaded it from us so far. THANK YOU!

6. THE CRITICAL ACCLAIM THE EP IS GETTING IS SIMPLY STAGGERING AND HAS BEEN FEATURED IN SOME OF THE BIGGEST PUBLICATIONS AROUND SUCH AS METAL HAMMER AND KERRANG! BUT IF YOU HAD TO CHOOSE, IS THERE ONE ASPECT OF THE ALBUM YOU ARE MOST PROUD OF AS A BAND?

This is going to sound like a bit of a cop out to your question, but I'm honestly just proud of the fact that we got it out.

The last 2 years have been nothing but struggle for this band. We've had line-up changes, marriages, kids, illness, management dropping us. You name it, it's happened. A few months ago, we scrapped everything apart from the actual music and started again. I'm proud of Nath for designing our logo and artwork, I'm proud of Eric for the video side of things and I'm proud of Andy and Ed for pulling the shit back together the countless times it's almost come unstuck.

We are a dynamic, angry metal band. Nothing (I don't think) is in common time and we somehow seems to straddle a few different genres whilst remaining ultimately extreme metal. “

7. IF PEOPLE HAVE NEVER HEARD OF TAKEN BY THE TIDE BEFORE, HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOURSELF A BAND?  IS THERE A SPECIFIC TRACK WHICH YOU FEEL BEST ENCAPSULATES THE TAKEN BY THE TIDE STYLE?

Anything from Revenge but understand that that one song might not be the sum of all parts. We are a dynamic, angry metal band. Nothing (I don't think) is in common time and we somehow seems to straddle a few different genres whilst remaining ultimately extreme metal.

8. LET’S BE HONEST, IT’S ONLY A MATTER OF TIME UNTIL YOU HIT THE MAJOR MAJOR BIG TIME. HOWEVER, IF YOU HAD THE CHOICE NOW TO HEADLINE ANY FESTIVAL WHICH WOULD IT BE AND WHY? ALSO, WHEN YOU ARE HEADLINING WHAT WOULD THE TAKEN BY THE TIDE RIDER CONSIST OF?

Hahaha very kind of you to say. We always joke that we're not a headlining band, so I almost can't answer you by default. We did a show recently where we actually got some beer on a rider and some well thought out snacks and sandwiches. We considered that a major step up. It’s hard to consider the lofty heights of an ‘anything goes’ rider from down here in the world of DIY shows.

9. TAKEN BY THE TIDE HAVE BEEN DESCRIBED IN MANY, MANY WAYS. YOU HAVE BEEN GIVEN THE TITLE OF METAL, METALCORE AND TECH METAL.  WHAT GENRE WOULD YOU PLACE YOURSELF IN IF YOU HAD TO CHOOSE JUST ONE?

The eternal question. Some things I just don't have an answer for…. All of the above, a bit.

 10. SOME OF THE THEMES OF THIS ALBUM ARE, TO PUT IT BLUNTLY, METAL AS FUCK! YOU HAVE STATED IN THE PAST “THERE ARE TRACKS ABOUT THE HOLOCAUST AND SEWING UP RUPERT MURDOCK’S JAW TO SILENCE MEDIA LIES AND PERSUASION THROUGH NLP” BUT IF YOU GUYS WERE ACTUALLY TO TAKE REVENGEON SOMEONE WHO HAS WRONGED YOU, HOW WOULD YOU DO IT?

Some medieval shit for sure. Think Pulp Fiction. It wouldn't be nice. There would be no happy ending.
