Small Talks Interview

QUIET SOUNDS

Small Talks are an amazing genre bending rock band who hail from Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Founded by vocalist and songwriter Cayley Spivey in 2015, Small Talks have quickly developed their own genre bending unique rock sound.

Their unique style, sound and energy has led to the band playing on some huge stages with some amazing names and even playing the final ever Vans Warped Tour this year. I recently caught up with Cayley to discuss the bands amazing sound, the final ever Warped Tour and The Cure…

“We are constantly growing and changing, that need for growth will not change.”

THIS INTERVIEW IS TAKING PLACE A FEW WEEKS SINCE THE RELEASE OF YOUR LATEST SINGLE “QUIET SOUNDS”. HOW HAS THE LAST FEW WEEKS BEEN FOR THE BAND? IS IT A GOOD FEELING TO FINALLY GET THE ALBUM RELEASED AND OUT TO THE FANS?

Releasing Quiet Sounds was a breath of fresh air, I’m very excited to be sharing new music again. Especially considering the amount of work our team and I put into the single, I’m just glad to be back.

UNTIL IT TURNS TO PETALS” IS AN AMAZING DEBUT ALBUM AND SHOWS THAT YOU HAVE CRAZY POTENTIAL! THE ALBUM FEATURES MANY DIFFERENT INFLUENCES AND GENRES ALL INTERTWINED IN A BRILLIANT WAY. HOW DID THIS UNIQUE SOUND COME ABOUT?

I never set a genre for the band. I always wrote based off my emotional state and what best represented how I was feeling. It’s a very raw album, which is why I feel it resonated well with people. The best part is connecting with others. It feels good to get this stuff out and find a common language through music.

“QUIET SOUNDS” SHOWS MASSIVE AMBITION FOR AN ARTIST SO EARLY IN YOUR CAREER. THE SONG HAS A MASSIVE ANTHEMIC FEEL AND SHOWS THE UNIQUE STYLE WHICH SMALL TALKS HAVE CREATED FOR THE BAND. AMBITION EMANATES FROM YOU AND IS CLEAR TO SEE ON ALL OF YOUR WORK SUCH AS “UNTIL IT TURNS TO PETALS”. QUIET SOUNDS” SHOWS JUST HOW MUCH YOUR SOUND HAS CHANGED SINCE YOUR INCEPTION. WOULD YOU SAY IT IS YOUR PERSONAL EXPERIENCES THAT HAVE LED TO THIS CHANGE AND EVOLUTION OF YOUR STYLE?

Touring and the people I have met since the release of UITTP have shaped the change of sound. Where our roots are still very apparent I’ve learned so much about songwriting and creating music anyone would feel invited to listen to and understand. We are constantly growing and changing, that need for growth will not change.

“The last thing I ever want to create is something shallow. I’ve always been more interested in digging deeper and shining a light on the things people are afraid to share.”

YOUR MUSIC HAS A DISTINCTIVELY PERSONAL FEEL TO IT. WHETHER THAT BE THE VOCAL PERFORMANCE OR THE IMMENSELY PERSONAL LYRICS. HAVE YOU ALWAYS HAD THIS PERSONAL APPROACH TO SONG WRITING? WHAT ARE YOUR MAJOR INFLUENCES WHEN WRITING A NEW SONG?

Emotion and feel are what I hone in on when writing. I don’t care about being technical or showing off I just want people to feel something when they hear the music. The last thing I ever want to create is something shallow. I’ve always been more interested in digging deeper and shining a light on the things people are afraid to share.

YOU GUYS HAVE BEEN ASKED TO PLAY A COUPLE OF DATES IN THE FINAL EVER WARPED TOUR. HOW DID THIS COME ABOUT? HOW DID YOU REACT WHEN YOU FOUND OUT YOU WOULD BE PLAYING ON THE TOUR?

Since I was younger like many musicians I dreamed of playing Vans Warped Tour, the fact I was a part of it is something I will remember and take with me forever. This came about when we won a voting based competition, I wish I could share this incredible experience with others.

“I would describe our sound as emotional, soft but exciting and fun. Sad and happy undertones. We genre bend a lot.”

IF PEOPLE HAVE NEVER HEARD OF SMALL TALKS BEFORE, HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR UNIQUE SOUND? IS THERE A SPECIFIC TRACK WHICH YOU FEEL BEST ENCAPSULATES THE SMALL TALKS STYLE?

I would describe our sound as emotional, soft but exciting and fun. Sad and happy undertones. We genre bend a lot. Quiet Sounds & Cop Car are very close ties. It’s hard to say which one encapsulates our sound more.

TALKING OF TOURS, YOU ARE CURRENTLY TOURING AS A FOUR PIECE FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER! HOW ARE YOU FINDING THIS NEW BAND SET UP ON STAGE? IS IT A STRANGE EXPERIENCE WHEN PLAYING YOUR MUSIC TO ADD AN EXTRA BAND MEMBER ONTO THE STAGE?

I love everything about us having a four piece now. Our lead guitarist for this tour Zach has added an incredible touch to our live sound. I’ve been enjoying the overall fullness of an extra instrument very much!

LET’S BE HONEST, IT’S ONLY A MATTER OF TIME UNTIL YOU HIT THE MAJOR MAJOR BIG TIME. HOWEVER, IF YOU HAD THE CHOICE NOW TO HEADLINE ANY FESTIVAL WHICH WOULD IT BE AND WHY? ALSO, WHAT WOULD THE SMALL TALKS BAND RIDER CONSIST OF?

I’d love to play Coachella or Bonaroo. I respect so many artists that have played those festivals and it would make me feel very validated to share a stage with incredible artists I’ve looked up to for a long time. Our rider would definitely be fruit trays and maybe a cheese tray. I’ve always felt a bit awkward when venues offer riders to us, so realistically we usually just put water.

“I think it’s really cool to allow yourself room to grow and change as well as trying new things.”

SMALL TALKS HAVE BEEN DESCRIBED IN MANY, MANY WAYS. YOU HAVE BEEN GIVEN THE TITLE OF INDIE ROCK, POP ROCK AND EVEN PSYCHEDELIC ROCK. WHAT GENRE WOULD YOU PLACE YOURSELF IN IF YOU HAD TO CHOOSE JUST ONE?

I don’t like to pick genres because there’s so many fun ways to mix things up when you don’t box it or have a preconceived idea. I think it’s really cool to allow yourself room to grow and change as well as trying new things.

YOU ARE CURRENTLY ON TOUR WITH THE BAND FLOODS, BUT IF YOU COULD CHOOSE A CO-HEADLINER TO DO A JOINT TOUR WITH WHO WOULD YOU CHOOSE? THIS COULD BE ANY ARTIST EITHER LIVING OR PASSED.

The Cure. I would love to tour with The Cure.

QUIET SOUNDS IS AN AMAZING SINGLE AND REALLY SHOWS JUST HOW GREAT SMALL TALKS ARE. 2018 IS ALREADY SHAPING UP TO BE A GREAT YEAR FOR THE BAND BUT CAN THE FANS EXPECT ANY MORE MUSIC FROM YOU IN THE COMING YEAR?

We’re working on an album.

FINALLY, AS WE ARE A UK BASED SITE, ARE THERE ANY PLANS TO COME AND TOUR ON THIS SIDE OF THE POND? ARE THERE ANY PLACES IN THE UK THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO VISIT OR PLAY A GIG?

I would LOVE to tour the UK if you guys would have us!
